They both do the job – allowing you to alternate between sitting and standing, for a healthier and more productive day.

But they each have something a little different to offer.

We’ve highlighted the top 3 reasons why you might favour one over the other.

So take a look to find out which could be the better option for you.

Top 3 Reasons to Choose an Adjustable Desk

You Have a Lot of Kit

OK, so it’s not an absolute necessity to have everything on one level, but if you work with a lot of tech, it will probably make more sense.

With a large enough desk there’ll be plenty of room for the essentials, along with multiple monitors, your printer, speakers, microphone and so on.

TIP – Shout out to the minimalists…even if you only work from a laptop, an adjustable standing desk can be the better choice for keeping everything streamlined and simple.

You Need a Good Weight Capacity

Comparatively, adjustable desks have a higher weight capacity than standing desk converters. But within each option is a wide range.

You’ll generally find that electric adjusting workstations can lift and support more than their manual counterparts.

You can expect a weight capacity of around 80 to 100kg from a good electric standing desk. This should be ample for the average set up. If you need more, top end desks will give you up to around 150kg.

TIP – When shopping for a sit stand workstation, you’ll find that some brands advertise both the lift and weight capacity. In these cases, take notice of the lift capacity as this relates to the maximum weight during adjustment.

You’re a Sprawler

By raising or lowering the entire workstation, you can continue to sprawl across your desk and work comfortably.

So if your day to day involves a mixture of good old-fashioned paperworking along with computer work, a standing desk should give you ample room for both. (Don’t forget the desk plant, some seriously strong coffee, a pen or two and perhaps a picture of the kids.)

TIP – There are extra large desk converters out there which also give a good amount of desktop space. But if you’re used to working from a large desk, you’re likely to find the transition from desk to converter more than a little challenging.

Top 3 Reasons to Choose a Standing Desk Converter

You’re Limited for Space

Woman sits smiling as she looks out from her office cubicleIf you only have a small space to work in – like a cubicle or the corner of the kitchen – a standing desk converter is a great way to make your workstation more flexible.

If width is the issue, look out for more compact risers from about 66cm wide. If depth is the issue, there are some great slimline solutions available.

Be sure to check the weight of your chosen converter and make sure your supporting desk is strong enough to hold the weight of your converter and equipment combined.

Also check the “footprint” can be fully supported by your desk. (i.e. the bottom of the supporting frame.)

TIP – For a more shallow workspace, avoid Z-frame converters. These adjust up and out or down and back, meaning you’ll need to allow for a little extra room behind you when elevating. Try an X-frame instead.

You Work Light

Working light means you need very little weight capacity. Plus single-tier converters tend to weigh very little themselves – an ideal solution if your supporting desk isn’t built for heavier.

2-tier converters are usually the better option if you have a keyboard and monitor set-up. Double check that the keyboard tray is large enough for your mouse as well.

Another option is to use a monitor mount with your converter. This way you have more flexibility over screen placement and can usually tilt and rotate as well. Check that the clamp or bracket is compatible and that you’re not exceeding the weight capacity.

TIP – Converters come in different types and styles. Make sure you choose the best standing desk converter for your needs.

You Need a Portable Solution

Or if you need to move from room to room when trying to find a quiet corner to settle in. Of course, this works better if you’re just using a laptop.

One of the key things to consider when looking for a portable workstation is the weight. Look for something that’s light enough to carry, but which offers you a solid and sturdy base to work from.

Some models feature a handle for easier portability. Smaller versions can fit into a large laptop backpack.

TIP – If you’re zipping between A and B, choose a lightweight backpack with straps and padding to keep everything safe and protected. Go one step further and opt for built-in USB charging as well.
