Q & A Section

Do Standing Desks Work For Tall Users?

If you’re taller than average, you’re no doubt used to shopping around and going bigger. Whether that’s for clothes, cars, extra legroom on flights and so on.

The same goes for standing desks. Of course, to make your standing desk work for you, you’re going to need those extra inches. And as with most products, those extra inches will cost you. So it’s important to make your money work for you and do your homework before you buy.

Reading this post, you’ll see we’ve done the research for you. Here’s what you can expect from our top 3 :

  • Each desk features triple stage legs. This allows for those valuable extra inches and extended height range
  • Each desk has dual motors which makes for smoother, more reliable adjustment
  • Some desks require a cross bar for added stability, but with each of our top picks their superior quality and build mean you can work-wobble free from even the maximum heights.

So yes, standing desks do work for taller users. You just need to know where to look and what to look for.

What is the Ideal Standing Desk Height?

We use inch calculator for recommended working heights – for both seated and standing work. Use these metrics as a guideline, but take your own measurements as well to ensure the best ergomonic positioning.

Take a look at the desk height calculator here. There are also some useful tips on monitor placement and working out the correct chair height.

Each of the desks we’ve featured in this post are suitable for users up to around 6 feet 8 inches tall. Don’t forget to take into consideration the extra inches required if you use an anti-fatigue mat, balance board, under desk treadmill and so on.

How Can I Make my Standing Desk Taller?

There are a couple of other ways to increase the height of your standing desk even further.

Firstly, you could fit furniture risers under the feet of your desk to add a few more inches. Make sure they are well finished so you don’t damage your carpet or scratch your wooden flooring. Fit them properly for maximum stability. You could also use felt or rubber levellers for added cushioning.

Also make sure they are strong enough to withstand your desk and your equipment. Cheap plastics won’t do. Go for wood, steel or titanium instead. There are heaps on the market so you should be able to choose something that works well with your desk and doesn’t make it look like a bodge job.

Some standing desk manufacturers sell custom made extenders but these are generally at the very top end of the market. (We’ve seen these in the US but not the UK – if you find them, let us know.)

Another option is to invest in a desk converter. These sit on top of your desk. Some are simple, static laptop stands. Others are adjustable, 2-tier workstations with heaps of space for all of your kit. Plus many types and designs in between.

If you do opt for a desk converter, you can also choose between manual and electric adjustment. Be sure to check the converter’s lift capacity so you know it can support your equipment. Also make sure your supporting desk is strong enough to withstand your equipment and the converter as well.

More about the Office Hippo Desk

Our first recommendation comes with the lowest price tag but it’s a great all-rounder with a couple of neat extras as well. We’ve pictured the grey oak top with white frame but other colours are available – oak, white and beech for the top. You can choose between a white or silver frame.

There are 2 grommet holes to the rear for cable management and / or monitor mounting. This model has a good weight capacity so it could deal with a range of set up options.

The controller features a digital display and has a 4-setting memory, making it ideal for multiple users. There is also a soft stop and start feature and anti-collision sensors to help keep your equipment safe and bump-free.

Although the Office Hippo desk comes with the lowest warranty, it’s still good cover for a great desk.

PROs – best for price, anti-collision, 4-height memory, choice of colours.

CONs – lower warranty period. (5 years vs 7 years.)

YO-YO DESK PRO 2+

Electric standing desk with beech top and silver frame

A great all-rounder, this desk has the largest worktop and a great warranty but a lower weight capacity.

Desktop 180cm x 80cm

Height range 65cm – 130cm

Weight capacity 100kg

Price range £730 – £800

More about the Yo-Yo Desk Pro2+

Yo-Yo Desk offers a wide range of standing desk size and colour combinations. We’ve chosen the Pro2+ as these models are designed specifically for the taller user. (We’ve pictured the beech top with silver frame.)

This particluar product comes with a complimentary anti-fatigue mat and a free controller upgrade with a 3-height memory. There is also an anti-collision function and overload protection.

Again, there are 2 grommet holes to the rear for cable management or monitor mounting. This desktop is the largest in our feature so you’ll have plenty of room to work with. Just be sure to check your weight requirements – the 100kg capacity is lower than the others. (Still a good weight though.)

Yo-Yo Desk is a well-known organisation with a great reputation. With a high profile – having featured on the BBC’s How to Stay Young experiment – it’s one of the best selling standing desk brands in the UK. It’s also a proud sponsor of the Get Britain Standing campaign.

Price wise, the Yo-Yo Desk Pro2+ is heading towards the upper end of the scale, but it’s a great desk with a 7 year warranty so you know it’s going to live long and work well.

PROs – great size, free mat and controller upgrade, great brand, great warranty.

CONs – towards the upper end of the price range, lower weight capacity at 100kg vs 120kg.

FLYTTA 2 (SLIM)

Electric standing desk with walnut top and black frame

With a great weight capacity and warranty but a smaller desktop, this model is better suited for more compact spaces.

Desktop 100cm x 60cm

Height range 64cm – 130cm

Weight capacity 120kg

Price range around £925

More about the Flytta 2 (Slim)

Another great choice, our final pick offers smooth and steady adjustment and is from a well-known and trusted brand. Flytta also sponsors the Get Britain Standing campaign and won the Independent Newspaper award for Best Buy in Standing Desks in 2019.

We’ve pictured the walnut top with black frame. Other top colours are available but you’re limited to the base colour. The desktop is the smallest within our feature, so would be better suited to a more compact work area.

(If you’re looking for something larger, Flytta standing desks come in sizes up to 180cm x 80cm, but these models will take you over the £1k mark.)

This model also has a great weight capacity and a 7 year warranty. Unlike our other top picks, however, the Flytta 2 (Slim) comes with just a simple 2 button controller. Great for ease of use but if you’re looking for a desk with height pre-sets, this won’t be the one for you.

PROs – smaller footprint, great weight capacity, great warranty, trusted brand.

CONs – higher price tag, less working space, 2 button controller lacks memory function.
